Letter, dated 2 Nov 1917, from British foreign secretary A J Balfour to Lord Rothschild (chair, British Zionist Federation) stating: ‘HM government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.’ It helped form the basis for the foundation of Israel 1948.
